Functional Unit

DSP Processors use parallel structures in their CPU architecture to increase the number of operations that can be performed in a given clock cycle.  These structures are called functional units and are made up of registers and data words or instructions.  This feature is important in performing higher order mathematical operations in a single clock cycle by providing temporary storage locations for data that is being processed.
