MSP430: Use of the port pins P1.4 - P1.7 on the MSP430x11x(x)

Problem:
Why are the pins P1.4 - P1.7 on my MSP430F1121 not
functioning as expected?

Solution:
The TEST pin on the MSP430F1121 requires a pull-down resistor < 30Kohm
for normal operation, as mentioned in the MSP430x11x1 datasheet. When
the TEST pin is high, P1.4-P1.7 are in the JTAG mode. If the TEST pin
is left floating, noise on the TEST pin can potentially switch the pins
P1.4-P1.7 to JTAG mode.
